Program and job descriptions

Crotona seeks college-age men who wish to develop leadership ability while working to improve the lives of boys in the Bronx. Volunteers serve as group leaders or assistant group leaders at Crotona’s summer programs, and are challenged to pursue a life of virtue while preparing our boys to do the same.

Responsibilities: Teach academic subjects from a prepared curriculum; guide a group of boys through various character building activities; promote morale and teamwork; speak periodically with every individual student about developing character through family life, education and social life; create dialogue with the families of the boys.

*Assistant group leaders support the group leader and provide increased individual attention to students.

Requirements: Volunteers must be mature and possess personal qualities and moral character that boys can emulate. Must be able to accept notions of objective truth and natural law.

a) Room and board at Overlook Study Center for the 7-week program.

b) Spiritual activities at Overlook are entrusted to Opus Dei, a personal Prelature of the Catholic Church.

c) Weekend excursions to places like Boston, Washington D.C., Catskill Mountains.

Salary

A stipend of $1,000 through Catholic Network of Volunteer Service (does not apply to entering seniors).

No other salary, except on a case-by-case need basis.
