Brief description
The Summer Service Project is open to high school boys who will be entering juniors or seniors in the next academic year, and are interested in deepening their commitment to service. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not required. Participants stay in a rural school in Mexico called El Peñon for approximately three weeks.
Teaching: Each morning, participants are paired up to teach English to a group of young Mexican boys from El Peñon School. There are typically two 45-minute periods each day.
Work Projects: Construction projects aimed at securing basic needs for indigent families are organized in surrounding towns. Participants spend 3-4 hours each day on these projects.
Join the Mexico Summer Service Project and you will have an ideal opportunity to live solidarity by serving those who are poor and less fortunate. You will do so with your friendship, your knowledge, and your hard work. At the same time, you will learn a great deal from the Mexican people, their culture, and their way of life.
Cost
Participants cover their own airfare (typically $500-$600) and pay YSI a fee ($750) to cover room, board, and other expenses.
