Tenley sponsors several activities aimed at the professional and character development of young professional men. The aim is to provide young men with the direction and encouragement to see their work and family responsibilities in a larger, more generous way: to view them as a means of serving God and others, a framework for growth in character, and a way to contribute to the common good of society.
The flagship of these activities is the so-called "Tuesday Night at Tenley" (a.k.a. TNT). This takes place every Tuesday evening of the year—except Christmas, New Year's day or July 4th, if these fall on Tuesday—starting at 7.30 pm. On any given Tuesday, TNT begins with a 30-minute meditation (time of prayer directed by a priest), followed by an invited guest speaker, an informal get together in the living room, or some other presentation of interest. The second Tuesday of each month is reserved for an evening of recollection.
Evenings of conversation Professionals from a wide range of fields are invited frequently to make presentations on some cultural or professional topic of interest. Past speakers have made presentations on a variety of topics ranging from economic issues to art criticism, stem-cell research to psychology, an old classic or new book that they have authored. The format is informal, with a half-hour talk followed by Q and As. These talks run from 8:15 to 9:15 pm.
Series of talks Occasionally several outstanding professionals in their field are invited to speak on different aspects of a common theme. The goal is to present the basic principals and address some practical questions of the issue, while also challenging the listeners to become outstanding professionals. Recent series of talks included themes such as “Visions for the New Century” and “Marriage and Fatherhood.” More information about the forthcoming series of talks is available here.
Service An essential aspect of character development is learning to forget about oneself and to thinking about others. A variety of projects and opportunities are offered where young professionals can learn how to serve and sacrifice themselves for others in small ways..
Evening of Recollection This is a monthly opportunity to reflect on your everyday life in light of basic Christian principles, geared to help refresh your spirit and strengthen your resolve to do good. These are held on the second Tuesday of each month, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. The calendar for 2010 is:
In keeping with a long Christian tradition, these silent retreats provide an opportunity to reflect on your everyday life in light of basic Christian principles, and to deepen your personal relationship with God. The retreats are conducted by a priest of Opus Dei, and have a focus that is especially appropriate for lay persons. These are organized a few times a year at Longlea Conference Center, and the calendar for 2010 is:
